HARD ROCK CALLING17.08.2010The under-celebrated talents of modest Brighton artist, Jan Irvine, shot to the front of the London stage at this year's Hard Rock Calling event. Jan, well known for her unique talent to speed-draw the moving body, was chosen by The Hard Rock Cafe organization to perform her skills at this year's music concert in Hyde Park. Over the 3 day event, which attracted over 140,000 music lovers, Jan worked tirelessly in the soaring heat to capture the performers on stage. Hard Rock Calling had a tremendous line-up this year which gave Jan the opportunity to work up close and personal to such iconic personalities as Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney, James Morrison, Jamiriquai and many more. Jan said “It was amazing to see these people in the flesh and whose music has been such a big part of my life. It was a privilege to draw them and I just hope I have done them justice.”
The drawings, which were being auctioned to raise funds for the Nordoff-Robbins Music charity, caused quite a stir as the stars themselves started bidding for each others. The delightful Bill Wyman, who was simply lovely to everyone, was the first to bid on a drawing of himself with Micki Free, the Grammy winning Native American Indian who literally rocks the U.S. with his legendary music. James Morrison said he just had to have the drawing of Stevie for himself and insisted on placing the winning bid. A total of over 20 Jan Irvine drawings are expected to raise many thousands of pounds for this fantastic charity.
What now? In addition to the commissions she now has from those performers who didn’t quite bid quick enough for their own portraits, Jan Irvine faces a very heavy workload leading up to her next major assignment as one of the few carefully selected artists at the 2012 Olympics.
